Devil’s Food Cake with Mocha Butter Frosting

For all of my sweet treat lovers, I’m back with another recipe from my grandma’s cooking archives. This is a devil’s food cake with a mocha buttercream frosting, which is the perfect thing to bake if you’re in the mood for something chocolatey. It’s super simple to make & is a total crowd pleaser <3

Devil’s Food Cake

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 c butter softened

  • 1/2 c sugar

  • 1 1/12 tsp vanilla

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 3/4 c flour

  • 1/2 c cocoa

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/2 c buttermilk

  • 1/2 c boiling water

What to do:

  • cream butter with sugar and vanilla in mixer bowl until light and fluffy

  • add eggs and beat well

  • combine flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt

  • alternately add dry ingredients with buttermilk to creamed mixture, beating well after each addition

  • add boiling water and beat until smooth

  • pour batter into lined 13x9 inch pan

  • bake at 350 degrees F for about 40 min or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean

  • cool 10 min

  • turn out on rack and remove paper

  • cool and then frost with mocha butter frosting

Mocha Butter Frosting

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 c butter softened

  • 2 tbsp cocoa

  • 3/4 tsp instant coffee granules

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla

  • 2 c powdered sugar

  • 1 or 2 teaspoons of water/milk (or as much as needed)

What to do:

  • combine butter, cocoa, coffee granules, and vanilla in a small mixer bowl until well blended

  • gradually beat in sugar until of good spreading consistency

  • add 1 or 2 teaspoons of water/milk (or as much needed) if too stiff to spread
