LA Restaurant Review: Krispy Rice

So I guess Krispy Rice isn’t really considered a regular restaurant because you can only order it for delivery on apps like Postmates and Doordash, but I still wanted to share my thoughts about it. Usually my boyfriend and I always order Sugarfish to-go when we are craving sushi and don’t want to leave the house, but on Labor Day it was closed, so we decided to try Krispy Rice because we both have always seen people post about it on social media and I always see it featured on delivery apps.

What we ordered:

  • Krispy Krunch Box - Krispy Shrimp Roll (3pc) Spicy Tuna Krispy Roll (3pc) Krispy Shrimp Handroll (2pc) The Original Baked Crab Handroll (2pc) The Original Spicy Tuna Krispy Rice (2pc) Truffle Avocado Krispy Rice (2pc) Spicy Hamachi & Wasabi Krispy Rice (2pc) California Cut Roll (4pc) Edamame - $45

  • Handroll Set - The Original Spicy Tuna Handroll (2pc) The Original Baked Crab Handroll (2pc) Krispy Shrimp Handroll (2pc) Krispy Fried Shrimp (3pc) - $25

Let’s start with the pros:

  • Super cute presentation. I love how pink all of the packaging is and they make everything look really good for pictures.

  • It’s convenient because it’s delivery only

Cons (get ready there’s a lot, unfortunately):

  • Not going to lie, but this is the most mediocre, underwhelming sushi that I have had in a while. The shrimp tempura was really the only thing I actually liked, which is a bad sign because this is a sushi place.

  • The wasabi was packaged and was so weird and slimy. I don’t even know if it went bad or it was actually supposed to be gooey like that.

  • They use so much imitation crab. Don’t get me wrong, imitation crab isn’t the worst thing ever, but if you are advertising baked crab hand rolls and serving a bunch of imitation crab…… like that is a straight up scam. Also, on their menu they never specify that the crab hand rolls are imitation crab, which is honestly deceiving because they are charging as much as if it were real crab. Regardless, in the case that it actually was real crab, the quality was horrendous. Crab hand rolls in general are one of my favorite things, so if I knew how bad they were going to be, I would have never ordered from here in the first place.

  • Over priced as fuck. Like I said before, how can you charge like $45 for a box that is like 75% imitation crab/California rolls. A box at Sugarfish is less, and you still get way more (plus it’s actually real fish lol).

  • Doesn’t seem that fresh. I have to be honest, after eating this I was kind of afraid I might get food poisoning.

Overall, it’s pretty obvious that I would not recommend this place to anyone. Krispy Rice has been around for a couple years now and I’m shocked how they have managed to stay in business when there are so many better sushi options in LA. When it comes to to-go sushi, Sugarfish is far superior and they are also less expensive, have better quality, and are just as cute presentation-wise. I truly feel bad posting such a scathing review, but I’m not going to let anyone who reads my blog get their money wasted on a bad experience.
