5 Productive Things to Do Instead of Doomscrolling
We’ve all been there—mindlessly scrolling through social media, only to realize an hour (or more) has disappeared. While it’s easy to get sucked in, there are better ways to use that time that will actually leave you feeling refreshed and accomplished. Here are five productive things to do instead of doomscrolling:
1. Go for a Walk
A quick walk, even if it’s just around your home or outside for fresh air, can help reset your mind, boost your energy, and improve your mood. Plus, getting some steps in never hurts.
2. Read (Even Just a Few Pages)
Instead of scrolling endless content, swap it for a book, article, or even a podcast. It could be something entertaining, educational, or self-improvement focused—just something that engages your brain in a meaningful way. (Here are some of our favorite books that we recommend.)
3. Organize One Small Thing
Feeling overwhelmed? Pick one tiny area to tidy—your purse, your desktop, or your inbox. Small wins add up, and decluttering even one thing can help you feel more in control.
4. Go to an Exercise Class
Instead of wasting time scrolling, get your body moving. Whether it’s Pilates, yoga, or a strength training class, exercising boosts your energy, improves your mood, and gives you a real sense of accomplishment—way better than losing an hour to your phone.
5. Write Down One Goal and a Quick Action Step
If you always feel like you “don’t have time” to work on your goals, swap out scrolling for a moment of reflection. Write down one thing you want to achieve this week (big or small) and list one step you can take toward it today.
Doomscrolling is a habit, but so is being intentional with your time. Next time you catch yourself mindlessly refreshing your feed, pause and pick one of these simple swaps instead. Your mind (and mood) will thank you.
